Horse riding on the beach

A ride along the beach is popular, but horse riding on the North Sea coast is subject to rules. Those rules are set in the local bylaw (APV) and differ from one municipality to another.

The general rule: seasonal

On most Dutch beaches horse riding is allowed outside the bathing season, roughly from 1 October to 1 May. During the summer months it is often prohibited or only permitted early in the morning, and always away from the supervised and busy swimming zones. Some municipalities designate fixed riding beaches or routes; others require a permit. The exact period, times and zones vary by municipality.

Tips for a ride along the sea

  • Stick to the seasonExpect horse riding to be off-limits on many beaches during the high season. Outside the bathing season there is the most space and the rules are most relaxed.
  • Check for a permitA number of municipalities require a permit for horses on the beach, sometimes for a fee. Arrange this with the municipality in advance.
  • Keep away from swimmersKeep a wide distance from the supervised swimming zone, playing children and beach bars. Horses and crowds do not mix well.
  • Mind the tideRide around low tide when possible, when the beach is wide and firm. As the tide comes in the beach narrows quickly.
  • Be considerateAvoid the access routes and sunbathing spots of other beachgoers. A calm, respectful ride prevents complaints and keeps beaches open to riders.

Rules by resort

Because every municipality has its own rules, it is wise to consult the current bylaw or municipal website before heading onto the beach. See the seaside resorts on Strandwijzer for information by destination.

This information is general in nature. Always consult the current bylaw or municipal website of the relevant municipality for the applicable rules.
