Methodology
Below you can read how we determine the Strandscore and the surf score, and how the Strandbierindex works.
Strandscore
The Strandscore is a single mark for the beach weather at each seaside resort. The higher the mark, the more pleasant it is on the beach.
What the score means:
- 7.0 and up: fine beach weather, plenty of sun, little wind.
- 5.5 to 6.9: fair beach weather, changeable.
- below 5.5: moderate beach weather, cloudy with a chance of showers.
›How do we calculate the Strandscore?
The mark combines temperature, sun, wind, chance of rain, UV and sea temperature into one weighted score. Weather data comes from Open-Meteo and refreshes every half hour per resort.
Surf score
The surf score rates the surf conditions at each spot. The higher the mark, the better the conditions for getting on the water.
- 7.0 and up: good conditions.
- 5.0 to 6.9: moderate conditions.
- below 5.0: poor conditions.
›How do we calculate the surf score?
The mark combines wave height, wave period, wind direction and wind strength into one weighted score. Data comes from Open-Meteo Marine.
Strandbierindex
We record the price of one standard beach beer, the cheapest regular beer on the menu, excluding happy hour and excluding speciality beer. That is exactly what you pay when you order a beer.
No volume normalisation: one serving is one serving. So we do not convert prices to a standard volume, a beer is what it is, and that is exactly what we want to compare.
Automated weather reports
The Strandwijzer beach weather is generated automatically from Open-Meteo weather data for all Dutch seaside resorts. It appears every Monday and Friday and contains a national beach weather report and a location-specific report per resort.
