Six beach clubs are spread along the access road to Callantsoog, a village on the North Sea in the municipality of Schagen. Until 1 January 1990 Callantsoog was an independent municipality; since then it has been part of Schagen, together with seaside resorts such as Petten and Grote Keeten.
The beach itself is wide and slopes gently down to the water. The beach clubs offer plenty of choice: from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can drop in both early in the day and in the evening.
The average rating of the beach clubs is 4.4 out of 5. The atmosphere is a mix of relaxed and lively, with a few venues aimed at a more upmarket crowd. That makes Callantsoog suitable for a quiet day by the sea as well as a busier visit in high season.
Behind the dunes lies the village, with shops and places to eat within walking distance of the beach. The Zwanenwater, an area of dunes and lakes just south of the village, is a well-known nature reserve that draws many walkers and birdwatchers.
If you want to explore further from Callantsoog, you will find other seaside resorts a short distance away. Petten lies about 7.9 kilometres to the south, Julianadorp aan Zee just over 9 kilometres to the north and Schoorl aan Zee around 13 kilometres on.
The same rules for dogs apply across the whole municipality of Schagen, with several stretches of beach where dogs are allowed off the lead all year round. Several beach clubs welcome dogs, which makes Callantsoog a practical destination for dog owners too.
The beach is easy to reach by car. Parking is available within walking distance; you will find the exact locations and rates in the parking overview on this page. By public transport, Schagen station at 8.9 kilometres is the nearest connection point, from where you cover the final stretch by bus or bike.
Thanks to the combination of a wide beach, a village within walking distance and a nature reserve nearby, Callantsoog is a versatile place for a day out or a longer stay by the coast. The facilities are in good order and the choice of places to eat and drink covers the whole rhythm of the day, from morning coffee to dinner with a sea view.

The atmosphere ranges from relaxed out of season to lively on warm summer days. If you want to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to come in the morning or pick a day outside high season.
The nearby Zwanenwater nature reserve draws walkers and birdwatchers all year round, even when the beach itself is a little quieter. That keeps Callantsoog worth a visit outside the summer months too.
Bear in mind that the opening hours of the beach clubs vary by season. In winter not all venues are open; check this in advance if you are visiting out of season.
