The abbey of Egmond, the oldest monastery in Holland, stands in Egmond-Binnen and gives the village its best-known landmark. The beach itself lies some way off: between the village and the sea you will find the dunes of the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat. Egmond-Binnen is part of the municipality of Bergen, together with the neighbouring villages of Egmond aan Zee and Egmond aan den Hoef.
The village sits about two kilometres from Egmond aan Zee, where most of the beach amenities are found. If you want to reach the beach from Egmond-Binnen, you first cross the dune area. Along the coast, this part of the municipality has one beach club, with an average rating of 4.5 out of 5.
That beach club serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can drop in both early in the day and in the evening. The differences in price and atmosphere between the beaches of Bergen are limited; the broad sandy beach and the adjoining dunes are the starting point everywhere. Walkers and cyclists often use Egmond-Binnen as a starting point for routes through the dune reserve towards the sea.
The nearest railway station is Castricum, about 6.6 kilometres away. From there a bus service runs towards the Egmonden. By car you reach the coastal area via the roads through the municipality of Bergen; for current parking options please see the parking overview on this page.
Several seaside resorts lie in the immediate area. Egmond aan Zee is 1.9 kilometres away and has the largest range of beach clubs, shops and places to eat and drink. Egmond aan den Hoef is 2.6 kilometres away, and Castricum aan Zee 4.1 kilometres. If you are looking for more choice or a livelier beach, you will find that most quickly in Egmond aan Zee.
The dune area around Egmond-Binnen is part of the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat and is managed for drinking water extraction and nature. Walking and cycling paths run through the dunes, connecting the village with the coast. The combination of a quiet village, the dune area and the nearby beaches makes Egmond-Binnen well suited to anyone who prefers to keep the bustle of the coastal towns at a distance.
Great for
The beach near the Egmonden slopes broadly and gently, which suits families with young children. The beach club serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can spend a whole day there with the children. The walk through the dunes from Egmond-Binnen to the beach is manageable for older children.
Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs in the municipality. The off-lead rules vary by season; you will find the details further down under the beach information. In winter there is plenty of freedom, while in summer set times and zones apply.
The beach club on this stretch of coast serves dinner, so you can stay and eat until after sunset. The average rating of 4.5 out of 5 points to a well-kept kitchen. The sun sets straight into the sea here, which makes for a fine evening at the table.
For lunch you can head to the beach club with a sea view. The menu runs from breakfast right through to dinner, so there is plenty of choice in the middle of the day too. After your meal, the dune paths lead straight into the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat.
A corporate outing here combines a beach walk with a cycle or walking tour through the dune area. The beach club can host groups for lunch or dinner. The location away from the busiest coastal towns offers calm for a day out with colleagues.
In poor weather, the abbey of Egmond in the village offers an indoor destination with a museum shop. The beach club is a sheltered spot to take cover while enjoying something to eat. For more covered options, Egmond aan Zee is only a short distance away.
In the summer months the coast near the Egmonden draws the most visitors. Egmond-Binnen itself stays quieter than Egmond aan Zee, because the village lies at a distance from the beach and the beach offering is limited to a single club.
On warm days the beach club and the beach access points fill up; outside the school holidays it is noticeably quieter. Spring and late summer are well suited to walking and cycling through the dune reserve, with fewer people on the paths.
The abbey of Egmond is a draw all year round and holds church services and guided tours. In winter the beach is bare and windy, but for dog owners that is exactly when it is appealing, thanks to the generous off-lead rules.
If you are looking for events, you can head to Egmond aan Zee, where there are more activities and places to eat and drink throughout the year. The half marathon of Egmond, in January, runs through the dunes and along the coast of the whole municipality.
Bear in mind that the beach club's opening hours may differ outside the season. Check this in advance, especially in the winter months.
