Where the Nieuwe Waterweg meets the North Sea, you'll find the beach at Hoek van Holland. The town forms the westernmost point of the municipality of Rotterdam, around 25 kilometres from the city itself. On the north bank, large seagoing vessels pass close to the shore, a sight you won't see on most Dutch beaches.

Along the beach stand around 25 beach clubs, with an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. The choice ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can drop in early in the day as well as in the evening. The atmosphere varies from one venue to the next: some are set up for families, others for a quiet dinner or a larger group.

The beach is broad and slopes gently towards the sea. The walking piers at the mouth of the Waterweg, with the Noorderhoofd at the front, are a reliable point of orientation. From here you look out over the shipping sailing in and out of the port of Rotterdam, with the Maasvlakte on the far side.

Hoek van Holland is easy to reach by public transport. Hoek van Holland Strand station lies around 1.1 kilometres from the beach, within walking distance or a short ride. If you come by car, you'll find parking within walking distance; some of it is paid. The exact rates and locations are listed in the parking overview on this page.

There are more seaside resorts within reach nearby. Kijkduin is around 10.7 kilometres away, Rockanje 13.7 kilometres away on the other side of the Waterweg, and Scheveningen 16.3 kilometres away. So if you want to compare several beaches, you have plenty of choice.

Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs, and on parts of the beach they can run off the lead. The rules differ by zone and by season; more on that further down. For families there are venues geared towards children, and the broad beach offers space to play.

If you have something to celebrate, there's also a wedding venue available, and corporate outings are possible at several venues. That makes Hoek van Holland not just a place for a day at the beach, but also for larger occasions.

Great for

Families

The beach is broad and slopes gently towards the sea, leaving plenty of room to play. Several beach clubs are set up for children and serve all day long, from breakfast to dinner.

Bring your dog

Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs. On parts of the beach they can run off the lead all year round; on the main beach, limited hours apply in summer. The exact zones are described below.

Romantic dinner

Several venues serve dinner with a view over the shipping at the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg. The sun sets straight into the sea here, making for a calm spot in the evening.

Lunch by the sea

Most of the beach clubs have lunch on the menu, alongside breakfast and brunch. So you can stop in for a bite by the sea both in the middle of the day and early on.

Corporate outing

Corporate outings are possible at several venues. The station within walking distance and the parking within reach make it easy to get to for a group from the region.

Bad weather

When it's raining or windy, the covered parts of the beach clubs offer shelter, with a view over the sea and the passing ships. A number of venues are open all year round for a warm meal.

In the summer months, the beach at Hoek van Holland is at its busiest. Almost all the beach clubs are open then, and the coast draws visitors from Rotterdam and the wider area. On warm days and during the school holidays, the beach fills up, certainly around midday.

Out of season, the picture changes. In spring and autumn it's quieter and not every venue is open daily. Walkers and dog owners then have the beach largely to themselves, especially along the piers by the Waterweg.

Its position at the mouth of the Nieuwe Waterweg gives the beach its own character all year round. The seagoing vessels arriving and departing can be seen in winter too, when the beach is otherwise empty.

If you want to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to come outside the school holidays or early in the day. For a lively atmosphere with plenty of people around you, summer weekends are the moments to choose. Check beforehand which venues are open, as opening hours vary considerably from season to season.
