Thirteen beach clubs are spread along the beach at Kijkduin, the second seaside resort of Den Haag after Scheveningen. The sand is wide and slopes gently down to the sea, with dunes that begin right behind the boulevard.

Kijkduin has a different character from the larger Scheveningen, around 5.7 kilometres further along the coast. The buildings are lower and the pace is calmer, although the beach and boulevard get busy in high season. In recent years the area around the Deltaplein has been redeveloped, with restaurants and cafés, shops and apartments.

The average rating of the beach clubs is 4.3 out of 5. The choice ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can drop in both in the morning and in the evening. Some clubs focus on a simple beach lunch, others on a more elaborate dinner with table service.

To the south of Kijkduin lies the Zuiderstrand, which gives way to a quieter, broader dune area towards the boundary with the municipality of Westland and Ter Heijde. This part is less built up and draws walkers and dog owners. To the north the coast continues towards Scheveningen.

Den Haag Centraal is around 7.5 kilometres away and is the nearest station. From there, bus and tram connections run towards the coast. If you come by car, you will find parking within walking distance of the beach; some of it is paid. The exact rates and locations are listed in the parking overview on this page.

Besides Scheveningen, the surroundings also include Hoek van Holland at around 10.7 kilometres and the Wassenaarse Slag at 13.9 kilometres. That makes Kijkduin a good starting point if you want to explore several stretches of the South Holland coast.

Great for

Families

Bring your dog

The Zuiderstrand near Kijkduin is well suited to visiting with your dog, with plenty of room to walk outside the high season. Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs, so you can stop for a drink after your walk.

Romantic dinner

Various clubs serve a more elaborate dinner with table service and a view of the sea. The sun sets here in the west, straight above the horizon, which sets the tone for the evening by the sea.

Lunch by the sea

The choice ranges from a simple beach lunch to brunch. With thirteen clubs in a row there is plenty to pick from, from a sandwich to a fuller midday menu.

Corporate outing

Several beach clubs can host groups and corporate outings. The beach lends itself to outdoor activities, followed by drinks or dinner indoors.

Bad weather

In rain or wind, the covered beach clubs offer shelter for a lunch or drinks. The redeveloped area around the Deltaplein also has shops and places to eat and drink within walking distance.

In the summer months the beach and boulevard at Kijkduin are busy. All thirteen beach clubs are open then, often from breakfast through to the evening. On warm days the beach and the terraces fill up, especially at weekends.

The early and late season has a calmer character. In spring and autumn it is quieter, with walkers and dog owners on the beach and the adjoining Zuiderstrand. Some clubs reduce their opening hours or close outside the season.

In winter the Zuiderstrand remains popular with walkers, while fewer facilities are open on the beach itself. The dune area to the south of Kijkduin offers shelter from the wind all year round.

If you want to avoid the crowds, it is best to come on a weekday or outside the school holidays. During spells of fine summer weather it is wise to set off early, as parking and terraces fill up quickly.
