Behind the dunes of the Westland region, between the greenhouses and the North Sea, lies the beach at Monster. The village is part of the municipality of Westland and borders directly on Ter Heijde, which begins less than a kilometre away. The beach forms part of an unbroken stretch of coast that continues towards 's-Gravenzande and Kijkduin.

Two beach clubs handle the catering by the sea here. Together they earn an average rating of 4.3 out of 5. Both serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can drop in early in the morning and linger at the end of the day for a meal with a view of the water. The atmosphere along this part of the coast is lively, with a mix of walkers, dog owners and families.

The beach itself is wide and sandy and slopes gently down to the sea. Behind the beach lies an area of dunes that blends into the Westland greenhouse landscape. That combination makes it possible to pair a beach visit with a walk or cycle ride through the dunes. The coastline at Monster is less built up than the larger seaside resorts further along, which keeps it quieter outside the busy summer days.

Several beaches lie within easy reach nearby. Ter Heijde is the closest at 0.8 kilometres, followed by Kijkduin at around 5 kilometres and Hoek van Holland at almost 6 kilometres. So if you find the beach at Monster too quiet, you can switch within a short drive to a livelier or, conversely, a more natural stretch of coast. A little to the south lies the Zandmotor near 's-Gravenzande, an artificially created sandbank where nature spreads the sand along the coast.

By car, Monster is easy to reach via the Westland. There is parking within walking distance of the beach; you will find the exact locations and rates in the parking overview on this page. By public transport it is a little trickier: the nearest station is Hoek van Holland Strand at 5.7 kilometres, so from there you will need a connecting bus or a bike.

The beach at Monster lends itself to all sorts of visits. Dog owners come here all year round, helped by the generous dog rules on the Westland beach. Families find a wide beach with catering within walking distance. The beach clubs are also suitable for a corporate outing, and there is a wedding venue available for anyone wanting to marry by the sea.

Great for

Families

The wide, sandy beach slopes gently down to the sea, which makes it easy to keep an eye on things for families with children. Both beach clubs serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, so food and drink are within walking distance. The beach clubs have a reputation for being family-friendly.

Bring your dog

Monster lies on the Westland North Sea beach, where dogs may run free all day, everywhere, from 1 October to 1 May. Between 1 May and 1 October, dogs may run free before 10.00 and after 19.00, with a lead required during the day. Several beach clubs welcome dogs.

Romantic dinner

Both beach clubs serve dinner with a view of the North Sea. Towards the end of the day the beach grows quieter, which lends itself to a meal at sunset.

Lunch by the sea

For lunch you can head to either beach club, both open during the day. The wide beach makes it possible to combine lunch with a walk along the tideline.

Corporate outing

The beach clubs in Monster are suitable for a corporate outing by the sea. Their location in the Westland makes them easy to reach by car from the Den Haag and Rotterdam area.

Bad weather

In poorer weather the covered beach clubs offer shelter with a view of the sea. For indoor activities, the amenities of Den Haag and Kijkduin are a short distance away.

In the summer months, the beach at Monster is busiest at the spot where most visitors gather, especially on warm weekend days. The lively atmosphere comes through most strongly then, with families, walkers and dog owners all mingling together.

Outside the peak season it becomes noticeably quieter. From 1 October, dogs may run free across the beach all day, which makes the winter period appealing for anyone coming to walk the dog. The wide beach and the dunes behind it remain accessible all year round.

The two beach clubs are mainly active during the beach season, when they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. In the colder months the offering may be more limited; check the opening hours in advance.

If you want to avoid the crowds, early morning and the evening are good moments. The beach is quieter then, and in summer the more relaxed dog rules of before 10.00 and after 19.00 also apply. The nearby beaches of Ter Heijde and Kijkduin offer alternatives on the busiest days.
