Oostkapelle

Behind the dunes of Oostkapelle lies a village of just over 2,300 inhabitants, one of the larger settlements in the municipality of Veere. The small centre is made up of buildings interspersed with old farmhouses, and just outside the village there is a park with detached houses.
You reach the beach through several access points across the dune area. It is wide and slopes gently down to the sea, so at low tide it reveals a broad stretch of sand. Five beach clubs stand at the beach access points, with an average rating of 4.4 out of 5.
The beach clubs serve brunch, lunch and dinner. The atmosphere shifts throughout the day: relaxed during the day with beachgoers and walkers, quieter towards the evening and well suited to dinner with a sea view. On busy summer days it is livelier, especially around the well-visited access points.
Oostkapelle sits on the north-west coast of Walcheren, between Vrouwenpolder at 4.3 kilometres and Domburg at 5 kilometres. Westkapelle is 6.7 kilometres away. If you come without a car, you travel via Middelburg station, just over 10 kilometres away, and continue from there by bus.
The dune area behind the beach is part of a nature reserve and connects to woodland paths and cycle routes towards Domburg and Vrouwenpolder. The beach itself draws both families and walkers, and the combination of sea, dune and woodland makes it well suited to a varied day out.
For those staying several days, the surroundings offer plenty to combine: a beach walk in the morning, lunch at one of the beach clubs and a cycle ride through the hinterland in the afternoon. The five beach clubs are spread across the beach access points, so you can find food and drink at almost every crossing.
You can park within walking distance of the beach, partly for a fee. You will find the exact locations and rates in the parking overview on this page.
Great for
The beach is wide and slopes gently, so at low tide there is plenty of space to play. The beach clubs are family-friendly and serve brunch and lunch during the day, which makes a day out with children easy to plan.
Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs. Seasonal rules apply on the beach: during the bathing season your dog may be on most of the beach on a lead, with a closed-off section between two access points during the day. Outside the season and in the early morning or evening, your dog may run off the lead.
Towards the evening the beach grows quieter and you can dine at the beach clubs with a sea view. The coast faces west, so in clear weather you can watch the sun set into the sea here.
All five beach clubs serve lunch, spread across the beach access points. So you can stop for a light meal at almost every crossing, between a walk or a swim.
A corporate outing is possible at the beach clubs. The combination of beach, dune and the nearby cycling and walking routes makes it well suited to an active programme with a shared lunch or drinks.
When it rains or blows, the beach clubs offer a covered spot with a view of the sea. For more options, Domburg is five kilometres away, with more amenities within easy reach.
In high season, from May to September, the beach at Oostkapelle is at its busiest. The five beach clubs then run at full capacity and the beach access points fill up with beachgoers, especially on warm days.
The bathing season runs from 1 May to 15 September. During this period the beach rules for dogs apply and it is livelier around the well-visited crossings than in spring or autumn.
Outside the season it becomes quieter. The beach remains accessible to walkers, and the dune and woodland area behind it is then a reliable choice for those avoiding the crowds.
The surroundings lend themselves to cycling and walking all year round. From Oostkapelle you can walk and cycle through the dunes towards Domburg and Vrouwenpolder, even in the colder months.
If you prefer fewer crowds, your best bet is the shoulder seasons in early spring or autumn, when the beach is quieter but the beach clubs are often still open.
