Renesse

With 1,490 inhabitants, Renesse is a small village on the Kop van Schouwen, yet in summer it welcomes many times that number of visitors. It lies on the western part of Schouwen-Duiveland, in Zeeland. Until 1961, Renesse was an independent municipality; it then merged into Westerschouwen, and since 1997 it has fallen under Schouwen-Duiveland.
There are seventeen beach clubs along the shore, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 5. The offering ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so whether you want an early coffee or an evening meal by the sea, you will find a spot here.
The beach itself is broad and slopes gently, with dunes behind it. The dune areas of the Kop van Schouwen connect directly to the beach, which makes the area well suited to walking and cycling outside the season. Renesse is known for combining family holidays with nightlife; in the summer months the village centre is busy, while the beach offers plenty of room to spread out.
The atmosphere varies from one part of the beach to another and from one moment of the day to the next. Some beach clubs focus on families with children, others on a quieter crowd or on guests who stay for dinner in the evening. Several venues welcome dogs, and a number of them are suitable for a corporate outing or a seaside wedding.
Renesse is within cycling distance of Brouwershaven (6.9 km), Scharendijke (7.9 km) and Burgh-Haamstede (9.3 km). The nearest station is Goes, just over 27 kilometres away; if you travel by public transport, you will need to take the bus for the final stretch. Most visitors therefore come by car. Parking is available within walking distance of the beach, some of it paid; you will find the current rates and locations in the parking overview on this page.
For those who want more than just the beach: the hinterland of the Kop van Schouwen offers cycling and walking routes through the dunes and woods. In the low season it is quiet here, with room for a beach walk and a stop at one of the venues that stay open beyond the summer.
Great for
The broad, gently sloping beach gives children room to play, and several beach clubs cater to families. Various venues serve continuously from breakfast through to dinner, so a day at the sea with children is easy to plan around.
Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs. On the beach itself a seasonal rule applies: see the beach zones for the exact times and places where your dog may run free or must be kept on a lead.
A number of venues serve dinner with a sea view, which makes the beach well suited to an evening for two. Some of these locations are also available as a wedding venue.
With seventeen beach clubs, there is plenty of choice for lunch, from a sandwich to a more substantial meal. The offering includes lunch and brunch, so you can also drop in later in the morning.
Various venues in Renesse are suitable for a corporate outing, from drinks to dinner by the sea. The space on the beach and the hinterland of the Kop van Schouwen offer scope for an active programme alongside.
When it rains or the wind picks up, the beach clubs provide a covered spot for coffee, lunch or dinner. The hinterland of the Kop van Schouwen, with its dunes and woods, also lends itself to a walk when the weather turns.
In the summer months, Renesse is one of the busier spots on the Zeeland coast. The village centre draws many young people and the nightlife is lively, while the broad beach offers room to escape the crowds.
The seventeen beach clubs are fully open in high season, with an offering that ranges from breakfast to dinner. If you are after peace and quiet, it is better to come outside the school holidays or to head to the beach early in the day.
In the shoulder seasons the character changes. It grows quieter, some of the venues limit their opening hours and the emphasis shifts to walking and cycling through the dunes and woods of the Kop van Schouwen.
From October to April, the more relaxed dog rule applies on the beach, which makes the winter months appealing for those who come with a dog. Check in advance which beach clubs are open then, as the offering is smaller outside the season.
