With 23,470 inhabitants, 's-Gravenzande is the largest community in the municipality of Westland. The town lies in the horticultural area among the greenhouses, with a strip of North Sea beach on its western side. The coastline here is quieter than the better-known seaside resorts further along, and beachfront development is limited: there is a single beach club.

The beach at 's-Gravenzande is part of the continuous Westland coastal strip that runs from Monster via Ter Heijde to this point. The sand is wide and slopes gently towards the sea, without steep drops. Behind the beach lies a row of dunes that forms the transition to the hinterland with its horticultural businesses.

A striking feature in the area is the Zandmotor, an artificially constructed peninsula of sand to the south of 's-Gravenzande. It was created as an experiment to let the coast grow naturally: the sea and wind spread the sand along the coastline. The area is popular with walkers, kitesurfers and people seeking open space. Bear in mind that the Zandmotor has few facilities; anyone wanting something to eat or drink will need to rely on the beach club or the village.

The station Hoek van Holland Strand is about 20 kilometres away, so it is not really close by. If you arrive by public transport, you will be dependent on the bus and a walk or cycle ride to finish the journey. Most visitors therefore come by car or by bike. Parking is available within walking distance; you will find the exact rates and locations in the parking overview on this page.

In the immediate surroundings you will find Rockanje (5.8 kilometres), Ouddorp aan Zee (11.4 kilometres) and Brouwershaven (14.6 kilometres). If you are looking for more bustle and more beach clubs, the neighbouring towns are worth considering, but 's-Gravenzande itself mainly attracts people who appreciate the calm and the space of this stretch of coast. It is a beach for a walk, for the dog and for anyone wanting to explore the Zandmotor, with the town a short cycle away for those after some shopping or a terrace.

Its setting in the Westland means the beach is quickly reached from the Westland villages and the south of Den Haag. Outside the high season it is often quiet here on weekdays, with the wind and the sea as your main company.

Great for

Families

The wide beach slopes gently towards the sea, which is handy with small children who want to play in the shallows. With one beach club and relatively few facilities, this is more a beach for a quiet day than for a full day's programme. To be on the safe side, bring your own food and drink.

Bring your dog

Dogs are widely permitted here: from 1 October to 1 May they may run off the lead all day across the beach. During the summer months, off-lead is allowed before 10.00 and after 19.00. Watch out for the Zandmotor just south of the village: a lead is required there all year round, even in winter.

Romantic dinner

The choice is limited to the one beach club, so the options for dinner by the sea are few. In clear weather, though, the open coastline offers a peaceful view of the sunset. For more choice of restaurants you will need to head to the centre of 's-Gravenzande or the neighbouring towns.

Lunch by the sea

The beach club is the place to go for lunch with a sea view. Check the opening hours in advance, as the offering can be limited outside the season. On busy summer days it is wise to book or arrive early, given the single catering address on this stretch of beach.

Corporate outing

The open space and the Zandmotor lend themselves to outdoor activities such as beach walks or guided kitesurfing. For larger groups, the catering capacity here is limited. If you are looking for an outing with catering and function space, you would do better to choose a seaside resort with more facilities.

Bad weather

In rain and strong wind this beach offers little indoor space; there is one beach club for shelter. Many visitors head to the centre of 's-Gravenzande when the weather turns. In a storm, the Zandmotor is mainly of interest to those who enjoy rugged coastal weather, provided you dress for it.

The season on this stretch of coast largely revolves around the summer months, when the beach club is open and the beach draws the most visitors. On warm days, people come here from the Westland villages and from Den Haag.

Outside the high season the character changes considerably. From 1 October, dogs may run off the lead all day, and the beach is then mainly visited by dog owners and walkers. On weekdays in autumn and winter it is often quiet here.

The Zandmotor is a draw for kitesurfers and walkers all year round, independent of the beach season. When the wind picks up, the area is popular with watersports enthusiasts.

As the largest community in the Westland, 's-Gravenzande itself has activity in its centre throughout the year, but there are hardly any large beach events on this stretch of coast. Anyone seeking bustle and a programme of events will find it sooner in the neighbouring towns. Calm is the main characteristic here, even in summer when the better-known beaches fill up.
