Westenschouwen

Tucked behind the line of dunes at the far western tip of Schouwen-Duiveland lies the hamlet of Westenschouwen. Until 1816 it was an independent municipality; after that it became part of the municipality of Burgh. Today it is best known as the gateway to a wide North Sea beach, with four beach clubs within easy reach.
The beach borders the Kop van Schouwen, an expansive dune area that gives way to woodland and heath. Walking and cycling paths run through the dunes to the beach, where the sea leaves a broad, flat tideline at low water. This is a beach without large-scale development, with the Westerschouwse Bosjes and the dunes as its hinterland.
The four beach clubs serve lunch and dinner and together hold an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. The atmosphere is relaxed: no busy promenade, but a beach where the pace is gentler. If you want to eat, you can choose between lunch on a walk or dinner with a sea view at the end of the day.
Westenschouwen lies within walking distance of Burgh-Haamstede, whose shops, terraces and eateries are closer than at many a seaside resort. Burgh-Haamstede is around 400 metres away, Nieuw-Haamstede a good five kilometres, and Kamperland a little over eight kilometres. For anyone wanting to explore several beaches, this is a practical starting point.
The area lends itself well to combinations of beach and nature. The Kop van Schouwen is one of the broader dune areas in Zeeland, with paths that lead straight from Westenschouwen into the woods and dunes. After a walk of a few kilometres, you are back with your feet in the sand.
The nearest train station is Middelburg, almost twenty kilometres away. In practice, that makes Westenschouwen a destination for those arriving by car or bike. Regional buses run from Middelburg towards Schouwen-Duiveland, but the direct connection is limited.
Parking is available within walking distance, partly paid. You will find the exact rates and locations in the parking overview on this page. Bear in mind that it can fill up on summer days, so come early.
Great for
The beach is wide and slopes gently, with a broad flat stretch at low tide where children can play. The four beach clubs serve lunch, so you can easily grab a bite between swims. The dunes behind the beach offer space to walk and wander.
On the beaches of Schouwen-Duiveland, dogs may run off the lead all day on the beach and in the sea from October to April. Between 1 May and 1 October a lead is required during the day from 10.00 to 19.00; outside those hours dogs may run free. A clean-up rule applies everywhere.
The beach clubs serve dinner and look out over the North Sea, with the sun setting in the west. The relaxed atmosphere and the absence of a busy promenade make for a peaceful evening meal. Book ahead in high season.
All four beach clubs serve lunch, within walking distance of the car park and the dune paths. The average rating is 4.2 out of 5. A lunch pairs well with a walk through the Kop van Schouwen.
With four beach clubs and the dune area of the Kop van Schouwen right behind the beach, there is plenty of room for a group. A combination of walking or cycling through the dunes followed by lunch or dinner by the sea is easy to arrange. Discuss group bookings with the beach club in advance.
In rain or strong wind, Burgh-Haamstede, around 400 metres away, offers shops and eateries under cover. The beach clubs themselves have indoor space where you can take shelter. For a full day's programme in poor weather, there are also museums and attractions on Schouwen-Duiveland within driving distance.
In the summer months, the beach at Westenschouwen draws walkers, swimmers and day trippers. On warm days the car parks fill early, yet the wide beach still feels comfortable, because the space spreads everyone out.
Spring and late summer are quieter. The temperature of the North Sea rises slowly, so the swimming water is still chilly in May and often more pleasant in September than many people expect.
Outside the high season, the character shifts to a walking and dog-friendly beach. From October to April dogs may run free all day, which draws plenty of dog owners during that period.
The dunes of the Kop van Schouwen are good for walking even in winter, with sheltered spots between the dune tops when the wind picks up by the sea. The four beach clubs adjust their opening hours to the season; outside summer, check in advance whether they are open.
Westenschouwen has few if any large events; the emphasis is on peace and nature. If you want to avoid the crowds, choose a weekday or the early or late season.
