Three centres bear the name Egmond: Egmond-Binnen, Egmond aan Zee and Egmond aan den Hoef. Together they are known as De Egmonden. The seaside resort lies in the municipality of Bergen, in Noord-Holland, to the south-west of Alkmaar.

Until 2001, Egmond was an independent municipality. That year it merged with Schoorl and Bergen to form the present municipality of Bergen. For anyone heading to the beach, Egmond aan Zee is the main starting point: this is where the village ends at the dunes and the wide sandy beach.

There are eight beach clubs along this beach. The average rating works out at 4.3 out of 5. What is on offer ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can arrive early in the day and stay until after sunset. The atmosphere is described as relaxed and lively, with room at some spots for a quieter dinner.

The beach slopes gently and is wide, which makes it well suited to families with children. Dogs are welcome at several of the beach clubs, though restrictions do apply on the beach itself during the summer season. You can read more about that further on in this guide.

The location makes it easy to combine with other seaside resorts. Egmond aan Zee lies 0.7 kilometres away, Bergen 5.6 kilometres and Castricum aan Zee 7.7 kilometres. If you would like to alternate the beach with a walk, you will find the Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat behind the village, with kilometres of paths through the dunes.

Egmond is easy to reach by car; there is parking within walking distance of the beach, partly paid. You will find the exact rates and locations in the parking overview on this page. By public transport, Castricum station is the nearest, 8.9 kilometres away, from where you continue by bus.

Egmond combines a village centre with direct access to the beach. You can spend a whole day here: breakfast with a sea view, a walk through the dunes, lunch at one of the beach clubs and, at the end of the day, staying on for a meal as the sun sinks into the sea.

Great for

Families

The beach at Egmond aan Zee is wide and slopes gently, which is handy with young children. Several beach clubs cater to families, and they serve food all day, from breakfast to dinner.

Bring your dog

Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs. On the beach the rules of the municipality of Bergen apply, with more scope in winter than in summer; you will find the details under Beach info.

Romantic dinner

A number of beach clubs serve dinner with a view of the sea and the setting sun. The atmosphere is described as romantic at some spots, which makes an evening on the beach possible.

Lunch by the sea

All the beach clubs offer lunch, alongside breakfast and brunch earlier in the day. After a walk in the dunes or a morning on the beach, you can stop in for a simple or a more elaborate meal.

Corporate outing

A corporate outing is possible at several beach clubs. The combination of beach, dunes and hospitality lends itself to a day out with a group, perhaps rounded off with an activity in the dune area.

Bad weather

When it rains or the wind picks up, the beach clubs offer shelter indoors, with the same menu from breakfast to dinner. The village of Egmond aan Zee itself also has shops and places to eat within walking distance of the beach.

In the summer months the beach at Egmond aan Zee is busy. The eight beach clubs then run at full capacity and the wide beach fills with day trippers and families.

The summer season runs from 1 May to 1 October. During this period stricter rules also apply to dogs on the beach. Outside this season, from October to May, things grow quieter and the beach is popular mainly with walkers and dog owners.

Egmond aan Zee is known for beach events and competitions that make use of the dunes and the beach, including running events. The dunes behind the village draw walkers and cyclists all year round.

In the early and late season the weather is changeable, but the beach clubs with indoor space remain usable. The sunset over the sea is a fixture of any visit in the evening hours, especially in summer when the beach clubs also serve dinner. If you want to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to come outside the school holidays and on weekdays.
