The Westerschouwen lighthouse stands a few kilometres from Nieuw-Haamstede, at the western tip of Schouwen-Duiveland. The village of villas itself consists mainly of detached houses set among the dunes and woodland, to the north-west of Haamstede.

Nieuw-Haamstede falls within the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland. It is not a village with a centre full of shops, but a residential area with scattered buildings close to the coast. Here the dunes and the woodland run right up to the back of the beaches.

There are two beach clubs on the beach. Both serve lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is calm; this is not a place for mass tourism or nightlife, but for those who want to seek out the beach and the dunes. The beach clubs have an average rating of around 4.0 out of 5.

The beach connects to that of Westenschouwen, which lies 5.2 kilometres away. Burgh-Haamstede is 5.5 kilometres away and Renesse 6.9 kilometres. If you are looking for more amenities or a wider choice of beach clubs, those places will serve you sooner.

The broad sandy beaches along this coast shelve gently. Behind the beaches lies a continuous stretch of dunes that gives way to woodland, ideal for walking and cycling. The combination of beach, dunes and woodland within a short distance defines the character of Nieuw-Haamstede.

The area is hard to reach by public transport. The nearest station is Middelburg, 24.3 kilometres away. Anyone arriving without a car has to rely on the bus from Zierikzee or Renesse. Most visitors come by car or by bike.

Parking is within walking distance of the beach, partly paid. The exact rates and locations can be found in the parking overview on this page. In the summer months it is wise to come early, as the spaces close to the beach access points fill up quickly then.

Great for

Families

The beach is broad and shelves gently, which is handy with young children. The two beach clubs serve lunch and dinner, so you can easily step inside to shelter or eat between bouts of play. The dunes and woodland behind the beach offer space to walk or cycle after a day in the sand.

Bring your dog

Dogs are allowed on the beaches of Schouwen-Duiveland, with rules that vary by season. From October through to April dogs may run off the lead, while in summer they must be kept on the lead during the day. The calm of Nieuw-Haamstede makes it a pleasant place to walk the dog outside the high season.

Romantic dinner

Both beach clubs serve dinner in the evening with a view of the sea. The quiet surroundings, free of nightlife bustle, suit an evening for two. The sunset over the North Sea is clearly visible from this western coast.

Lunch by the sea

Both beach clubs serve lunch. The average rating is around 4.0 out of 5. The calm atmosphere makes it well suited to a lunch without the crowds, especially outside the summer months.

Corporate outing

With two beach clubs and quiet surroundings, Nieuw-Haamstede is suited to a small, understated outing. For larger groups and more choice of venues, Renesse lies 6.9 kilometres away. The dunes and woodland offer space for a walk or a bike ride as part of the programme.

Bad weather

When it rains, the two beach clubs offer a place to sit indoors with lunch or dinner. Nieuw-Haamstede itself does not have much in the way of indoor entertainment. For museums, shops or covered activities, Burgh-Haamstede and Zierikzee are the more obvious choices.

In the high season, from July through to August, the coast of Schouwen-Duiveland draws many visitors. Nieuw-Haamstede stays quieter than Renesse, which is known for its crowds and nightlife.

The two beach clubs are open mainly in summer and during the shoulder months. Outside the season the choice is more limited; check the opening hours in advance.

In spring and autumn it is quiet here. The dunes and woodland are then popular with walkers and cyclists. For those seeking peace and quiet, these months are the most appealing time.

Major events take place mainly in the nearby towns. Nieuw-Haamstede itself has no events calendar of any note; its character remains residential and nature-focused all year round.

On summer days the beach is busiest around midday. If you are after some peace, it is better to come early in the morning or in the evening, once most of the day visitors have left.
