With 6,630 inhabitants, Rockanje is a village on the island of Voorne, part of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee in Zuid-Holland following the local government reorganisation. The beach lies on the North Sea, a fifteen-minute drive from the centre of Brielle and just over half an hour from Rotterdam.
There are seven beach clubs on and near the beach. The average rating works out at 4.2 out of 5. The offer ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can come both early in the day and in the evening.
Rockanje beach is known for its relatively wide, shallow foreshore. The water deepens gradually, which makes the beach well suited to families with young children. The dunes behind the beach belong to the Voornes Duin nature reserve, a continuous area with walking and cycling paths.
Its location makes Rockanje a quieter alternative to the busier beaches at Hoek van Holland and Ouddorp, both of which are about fourteen kilometres away. If you want to explore further, you will find more beaches on the Zeeland side near Scharendijke, some nineteen kilometres away.
The atmosphere on the beach varies in character. At the beach clubs you can sit down for a quiet evening meal, but on sunny days and in high season it is lively too. Several venues focus on careful cooking and offer the option of catering for larger groups.
A number of beach clubs welcome dogs, although restrictions apply on the swimming beach itself during the beach season. On the page you will find the current facilities and opening hours for each beach club. There is parking within walking distance of the beach, partly paid for; the details are in the parking overview.
The nearest railway station is Hoek van Holland Strand, about fourteen kilometres away. By car, you reach the turn-off towards the coast quickly from the A15 and the provincial roads across Voorne. In the summer season the access roads and the car parks can be busier, especially on warm weekend days.
Great for
Rockanje beach deepens gradually and has a wide foreshore, which is pleasant for families with young children. Several beach clubs are set up to be family-friendly and serve lunch and simple dishes. The dunes behind lend themselves to a walk with the whole family.
At several beach clubs, dogs on a lead are welcome on the terrace. On the swimming beach itself, time windows apply during the beach season; outside those hours and in winter the beach is freely accessible. Bear in mind the duty to clean up after your dog, which applies all year round.
Several venues serve dinner in the evening with a sea view. After sunset the atmosphere is quieter than during the day. Booking is advisable in high season.
All the beach clubs serve lunch, and some open as early as breakfast and brunch. You eat with a view of the beach and the North Sea. The offer ranges from simple sandwiches to more elaborate dishes.
Several beach clubs can host groups and are suitable for a corporate outing. Combine a lunch or dinner with a walk through Voornes Duin. Arrange the options in advance with the relevant beach club.
The beach clubs in Rockanje have covered seating, so a visit remains possible in rain or wind too. The Voornes Duin nature reserve offers sheltered walking paths among the vegetation. Check the opening hours in advance, as these can vary outside the season.
In high season, roughly from June to August, Rockanje beach is busy on warm days. The car parks and access roads fill up then, especially at weekends. During this period the beach clubs run their full programme, with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In the early and late season it is quieter. Spring and early autumn are well suited to beach walks and a visit to Voornes Duin, the nature reserve behind the dunes. Not all beach clubs are open daily outside the season; check the opening hours in advance.
From 1 October the restrictions for dogs on the swimming beach are lifted, which makes winter appealing for dog owners. The beach is then freely accessible, subject to the duty to clean up after your dog.
The surrounding area lends itself to walking and cycling all year round. For specific events and beach activities, it is best to consult the information from the municipality of Voorne aan Zee and the beach clubs themselves, as the programme varies from year to year.
