Wassenaarse Slag

A road through the dunes leads from Rijksdorp to the North Sea beach at the Wassenaarse Slag. It is the northern access point to the more than eight kilometre long coastline of the municipality of Wassenaar. On the southern side lies the Meijendelse Slag, which comes out onto the same beach.
The beach borders on the dune and water catchment area of Meijendel. As a result, the built-up area stays at a distance and the area keeps its natural character. If you walk to the beach, you first pass through the dunes.
At the beach access you will find six beach clubs. Together they have an average rating of 4.4 out of 5. What is on offer ranges from breakfast and brunch to lunch and dinner, so you can come both early in the day and in the evening.
The atmosphere is described as relaxed, upmarket and lively. In practice this means you can lie quietly on a sunbed, but you can also settle in for a more elaborate dinner with table service. Several beach clubs cater to guests who stay longer than just a quick bite.
The Wassenaarse Slag lies between Katwijk and Scheveningen. You can reach Katwijk along the beach heading north; the beach access between marker posts 91 and 92 leads to that stretch. Scheveningen and Noordwijk aan Zee are a little further away and can be reached by car.
The nearest train station is Leiden Centraal, just over nine kilometres away. From the station you will need a connecting bus or a taxi to reach the coast. By car you drive via Wassenaar to the dune car parks at the beach access.
Several beach clubs are suitable for a corporate outing, and there is a wedding venue available for those who want a seaside wedding. The combination of table service, space and a view of the North Sea makes the beach useful for groups and parties, not just for individual beachgoers.
Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs, and outside the summer season there are generous rules for the beach itself. The exact times and zones are described further down. Children are well catered for on a wide beach with facilities near the beach clubs.
Great for
The beach is wide and slopes gradually down to the waterline, with room to play away from the busy terraces. Several beach clubs are set up for children and serve not only lunch and dinner but also breakfast and brunch, handy for a whole day by the sea.
Dogs are welcome at several beach clubs. Outside the period from 15 May to 15 September they are allowed everywhere on the beach and may run off the lead, which makes the Wassenaarse Slag a good spot for a walk with the dog outside the high season.
Several beach clubs serve dinner with table service and look out over the North Sea. The upmarket atmosphere and the view across the sea make the beach a good choice for an evening for two, especially at sunset.
All six beach clubs offer lunch, alongside breakfast and brunch. The average rating of 4.4 out of 5 shows that visitors are generally satisfied. You can choose between a terrace or a spot on the beach itself.
A corporate outing is possible at the Wassenaarse Slag. Thanks to the combination of space on the beach, table service and a full offering from breakfast to dinner, several beach clubs are suitable for groups and business gatherings.
When it rains or the wind picks up, the beach clubs offer a covered spot with a view of the sea. If you want to do more, you can head to Scheveningen or Katwijk, both a short distance away with more indoor facilities.
In the summer months the beach is at its busiest. The six beach clubs are then in full swing and the terraces fill up on warm days. Because of its location near Meijendel, it also draws walkers and cyclists who combine the dune area with a visit to the beach.
Between 15 May and 15 September there are restrictions on dogs on part of the beach. Outside that period it is quieter and the beach is suitable for longer beach walks, including with the dog off the lead.
In the early and late season some of the beach clubs stay open, although the offering may be more limited than in summer. With a strong westerly wind it can feel chilly on the open beach; the beach clubs then provide shelter.
The months outside the summer holidays suit those who want to avoid the crowds. The beach is then more accessible for dogs and there is less pressure on parking than on warm summer days.
